I was walking down west 3rd street the other day, and I know I cant walk down third street without getting a cupcake from Tonnie’s Minis. I walked up to the mini store window, peered inside..AND IT WAS EMPTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*click for dramatic effect*
I almost passed out! I thought I would never get to taste those moist, sweet, heavenly cupcakes again! I started plotting! Thinking maybe if I find the owner, he would give me the recipes so I could make my own. I mean if HE wasnt going to use them, no sense in letting them go to waste!
Now, I know there are plenty of other cupcake places and bakeries but they arent the same! A lot of these fancy gourmet looking bakeries put too much emphasis on decorating their cupcakes and not enough emphasis on making them taste good! Im not going to be looking at it long enough to care that much if it has bells and whistles on it! And who cares about a pretty cupcake if its dry? That’s like having an ipod with no songs on it.
Tonnie’s minis are cute, quaint little cupcakes with beautiful but simple designs and swirls. They make you feel like it’s your birthday, and your grandmother baked you cupcakes. I LOVE THEM!!!! Every single flavor is yummy but my favorites are Strawberry Twist, and Lemon. The other flavors include Death By Chocolate, A Taste of Coconut, Golden Heart, Chocolate Kiss, Carrot and so many others.
I bet you’re sitting there wondering “If theyre closed, why is she being cruel to us by telling us how delicious and pretty they are”. Well guess WHAT! They MOVED they didnt close! Of course the west village was a trendy location and a convenient location for some of us, but if you feel like trekking to Harlem, you can STILL get your fix! Im on my way RIGHT NOW! What lucky devils those Harlem residents are! Dont you just wanna slap em?
I cant wait for you to taste them! Nobody should go through life without experiencing these little rewards.

Gotta love the name! the name alone makes you want to call em up and say PLUCK YOU! This place has thee absolute BEST buffalo wings I have ever had! Now, I know youre all “well you said the same thing about the Olive Tree’s buffalo wings”. That’s because they taste EXACTLY the same (and theyre right around the corner from each other…hmmmm)
Just thinking about the sauce is making my mouth water. I usually get “medium” sauce on my wings, and a side of mild sauce to dowse them in. They have 4 choices of hot sauces which are mild, medium, hot and DEATH and if youre not into hot sauce you can get Barbeque (which is a little bit spicy) or Gold sauce (i dont know wtf that is but it tastes good too). I recommend getting Medium, because its spicy enough for a kick, but it wont make your nose run. I dont have time to be plugging my nose when Im inhaling my wings. People always ask me “Is the DEATH sauce really hot?”…what do YOU THINK!? Its called DEATH! I licked it once and fainted! Im exaggerating but u get the point.
I also really love their bleu cheese dipping sauce. I dont even LIKE bleu cheese sauce but I LOVE theirs! I dont know what they put in it or what they do to it but it is FANTASTIC! Im telling you, even if you dont like bleu cheese sauce, at least try it. You might love it! It tastes nothing like regular bleu cheese sauce. But if youre with your date, pass on that sauce because your breath will be KICKIN after you eat it!
Speaking of your significant other, dont go there for a date because you will be highly upset. This is a take out place. There is barely anywhere to sit. Its so small you’ll have to take turns to chew. Its also kinda dusty in there since they moved from their old location. They used to have a really cute space right on West 3rd street. But their lease expired and rent isnt cheap so they had to move to a hole. I miss the old place. It was more trendy and Tyson Bekford used to eat there a lot (with his fine self!). Since they moved everyone takes their food to go.
Aside from wings they have really great all white meat chicken fingers (Sidebar: Dont eat the chicken fingers WITH the curly fries. This combonation gives me the bubbleguts EVERY TIME! eat either one or the other, NOT BOTH!). They also have mozzarella sticks (which I like to dip in mild sauce, I dont like marinara), onion rings (I dip these in bleu cheese), fresh cut fries, curly fries, grilled chicken sandwiches and wraps etc. I say “etc” because Pluck U has gone OVERBOARD with their menu. They need to stick to the plan. I first discovered this restaurant in the 90s, and they had a basic menu with the aforementioned dishes. But now they have fried chicken, burgers, munchers, and a bunch of mess that doest need to be in there like JAMAICAN FOOD!
WTF ARE YALL DOING WITH JAMAICAN FOOD? Youre a buffalo wing spot! I dont want curry chicken with rice & peas from a damn buffalo wing place. I LOVE Jamaican food! Even the chain variety (*cough* Golden Krust)..but I dont want to get my beef patties from a damn buffalo wing store. Stick to the theme. That really annoys me! Thats like when TV Land started showing “CSI”! that is some BS! I like CSI but I dont want to see it on TV Land after “I Love Lucy”. I digress.
If you’re in the Greenwich Village area and youre in the mood for some wings to go, definitely go to Pluck U! If you want some wings, but youre in a “to stay” type of mood…then go around the corner to The Olive Tree Cafe.

Well…I WOULD give you a review on this place, but I cant. I think Im too black to eat in there! This place is the WORST! Now I guess I cant say that for the entire establishment and everyone in it, but I CAN say that there have been two separate incidences where I have tried to eat at this place with my black friends and was shunned! The wait staff acted like we were invisible..and when they did finally acknowledge us, they were “less than enthused”. On both occasions we felt uncomfortable, so we left. You might ask why I went back a second time. Well, I figured I’d give them a second chance. Maybe they were having a bad day or maybe it was my imagination. MAYBE NOT!!!
My friends and I eat in restaurants all the time! We eat in UPSCALE restaurants! We “know how to act”. We didn’t go in there all loud and ghetto, with an attitude acting like Sparkle Johnson at the Olive Garden (Warning: the video in the link might be deemed offensive to some viewers. Dont say I didnt warn you! If you pretend its not offensive, its actually funny as hell). No! We were just a group of regular people going in there to grab a bite to eat and we were treated like old slaves. If they had a colored section, I bet we would have been in it. (Or maybe we were, they just didn’t have the sign up)
Honestly, I have been told by several other black people who have gone to that place, that they were treated shitty and that the place has “racist tendencies”. So I guess u might wanna stay your black ass outta there. I could be wrong. But Im just sayin… *smirk*

Cafetasia is one of my favorite places to eat. It’s soooo pretty in there! The floating candles are beautiful. Gives it a real Harry Potter feel! That was one of the main places I would order from when I worked in SoHo (it was too far to walk to all the time). The service is great and the food is deeelish! My favorite dish is the chicken basil with fried egg. OMG Seriously after tasting that dish, it was the only thing I would order every day for like a month. That got me addicted to having fried eggs on all my dishes! Now, whenever I go into a thai restaurant I annoy them by asking them to alter their dishes by putting a fried egg on top. I dont care if it’s pad thai! I will put an egg on it. (*singing* If you like it then you shoulda put an egg on it uh oh ohhhh)
Their prices are pretty reasonable, especially if you go around lunch time. A lunch special is about $7.50 (between $9 and $20 for dinner) and lunch specials comes with an appetizer! You cant beat that! I recommend the petite cheese and crab rangoon as an appetizer! Its sooooooo good! If you go there, make sure youre going to be in the neighborhood for the next few days, because youre going to want to eat their food every day for at least a week.
My other favorite dishes include the Pepper dish and the grilled chicken with salad…but the grilled chicken with salad dish isn’t very filling.
If you’re a pad thai fan, you might want to pass on theirs. Im not overly fond of their pad thai. It has a funny after taste to me. I also hate the summer rolls…but that doesnt mean their summer rolls are bad. I think I hate summer rolls in general because they have mint leaves in them. I do NOT like mint in my food! blech!
Overall, Cafetasia is a great restaurant with fantastic service. Its a perfect place to go to for lunch and its a pretty romantic place to take a date as well. Its right in the east village near NYU, so after you eat, you can walk it off by shopping or window shopping if youre broke. It’s also right around the corner from Washington Square park. So if its warm outside, you can hang out in the park. Sight see and watch the weirdos walk by, be entertained by street performers, stare at protesters, give bums change, score some weed or whatever floats your boat..there’s a lot going on in that park.
I highly recommend Cafetasia! Go there then come back here and tell me what you thought of it!

I know its cold outside..but so? It wont be cold forever! And when it gets hot you’re going to want some ice cream…..DONT DO IT! There’s a less guilty way to go! Red Mango ! Mmmmmmm! It’s frozen yogurt! But dont think “Pinkberry”. Well..you can ALMOST think Pinkberry, because in New York, wherever you see a Pinkberry, you’ll most likely see a Red Mango across the street. I believe Red Mango is Pinkberry’s main competition. I don’t know why, because it’s really no contest! Red Mango is sooooooo much better! Red Mango has a much creamier texture. Pinkberry has this weird icy texture to it, and it tastes a little more sour and kinda watered down to me. I mean Pinkberry is okay..but Red Mango is gooooooood! The weird thing about it is, even though Red Mango has a creamier texture, the original flavor is 10 calories LESS than Pinkberry’s original flavor.
Both stores have pretty much the same toppings, but Red Mango has 3 new exciting flavors. Aside from original and green tea flavors they also have , Tangomonium, Pomegranate and Pumpkin Spice (seasonal). All of which will make you forget about ice cream for the moment. I bet youre salivating! Hahaha! Well guess what. THEY’RE OPEN RIGHT NOW! So don’t wait until its hot outside! Go get some NOW! (and get ME some too! lol)
They have SEVERAL locations around Manhattan and even locations in Brooklyn and Queens. The stores are pretty cute inside…so have yours to stay. I have provided you with two locations, you find the rest on their website. There are too many to list. I ain’t got time for that! lol
